First tracked

2026

Aasif Malbari has twice placed first in India in the chartered accountancy exams, at intermediate and again at final. On 11 August 2026 he was handed a company whose share price was about to fall 10 per cent because its chief executive had just walked out.

He became Managing Director and CEO of Godrej Consumer Products the following day, moving up from global chief financial officer and head of the Africa business.

The job he actually inherited

The circumstances were unusually hostile. Sudhir Sitapati had resigned four days after shareholders approved his reappointment through to 2031. On the day of that vote, he had told analysts about new launches, pet care expansion beyond Tamil Nadu and a commitment to lift India volume growth by 100 basis points a quarter.

The board met for ten minutes. The announcement came after market hours. By the next morning Godrej Consumer had lost a tenth of its value, and Malbari owned both the strategy his predecessor had just described in public and the credibility gap created by his leaving.

He also stepped up three days before Pirojsha Godrej succeeded Nadir Godrej as chairperson of the wider $20 billion Godrej Industries group. A professional chief executive was being installed at the precise moment the controlling family was completing its own generational handover.

Why the finance route matters here

Consumer goods companies almost always promote a marketer or a general manager into the top job. Godrej promoted its accountant, and the logic is visible in the timing.

When a company loses a chief executive suddenly, the immediate risk is to confidence rather than to strategy. Investors want to know the numbers were real and the plan was not one person’s enthusiasm. A chief financial officer who has signed off those numbers for years is the most direct available answer to that question.

Malbari was not only the group’s CFO. He was also running Godrej Africa, which is the harder half of the business and the part most Indian analysts understand least. Godrej Consumer operates across India, Indonesia and Africa, and the African portfolio, built largely through acquisitions in hair care, has been the most volatile piece of the company for a decade. Running it is an operating job, not a reporting one.

So the appointment is less a finance appointment than it looks. Malbari had already carried a profit and loss account in the group’s most difficult geography, and this is a promotion for that.

The credential nobody in Indian business ignores

The All India First Rank in the chartered accountancy examinations is one of the few genuinely unambiguous meritocratic markers in Indian professional life. Hundreds of thousands sit the exams. The rank is public, unbought and unarguable.

Malbari holds it twice, at intermediate and final, and is also a company secretary. In a country where senior appointments are routinely explained away by network and pedigree, that is a fact that closes the argument before it starts. It is also, on the evidence of a career spent in finance roles at Hindustan Unilever before Godrej, not the only thing he has been quietly good at.

What to watch

Three things, and they are measurable.

First, whether the plan survives. Sitapati publicly committed to raising India volume growth by 100 basis points a quarter and normalising operating margins. Those are specific numbers, made on the record, days before he left. If Malbari holds them, the strategy was institutional. If he quietly revises them, it was personal.

Second, whether the market was wrong. A 10 per cent fall said investors believed the company was tied to one executive. Malbari’s job for the next four quarters is to prove that judgement was an overreaction, which is a peculiar mandate: succeed and you demonstrate you were never the risk.

Third, Africa. He knows that business better than anyone else who could have taken this job, and it is where Godrej Consumer’s growth has most often disappointed. A CEO who came up through the hardest geography has an unusual freedom to be honest about it.

On pay: the terms shareholders approved for him on 7 October, set against those approved for Sudhir Sitapati.
